Are you also a startup founder?
Then you will already know how it feels..
You're doing sales, operations, client calls, focusing on product development, and you're also managing marketing and finance.. and somehow, when it comes to hiring, suddenly you’re the HR too. Honestly as a founder if you are trying to handle all six alone, the chances of failure are high.
Most founders naturally come from one domain - often product and lack knowledge of business processes. But a great product without sales, marketing, or finance behind it is just an idea waiting to fail.
But here is the thing, It's not just about hiring people and building up your team for the sake of doing it. Your first 10 hires should be a reflection of your vision.
They should see what you see. Understand what you want. Believe in the same vision. This alignment with them isn’t just about skills , It’s about mindset, values, and belief in your mission, making it from your mission their own.
Once we understand the need of building the core team, the next question is- what your team should look like?
Before you hire anybody,
Are you looking for a long-term hire? Someone who would stick around with your startup for years and possibly become your startup family?
Or is it a short-term project? You're looking for a person who can just help you out and then move on.
Do You want creative thinkers? problem solvers? Or nerds who can help you with all the critical things?
Define to yourself what matters the most and what will match your vision for your startup. Because that's what should be reflected from your very first 10 people.
Once you know what you're looking for, plan the hiring process.
After every interview ask yourself,
1.Does this person adapt quickly to changes?
2.Does this align well with my startup vision?
3.Will they complement the existing team and collaborate effectively?
4.Will they stay committed when things get messy?
Once you answer these questions, your instincts will tell you the truth. Hiring isn’t about the most impressive resume.. it’s about the person, their mindset, and how they’ll move with your startup when the real challenges hit.
It's time to realise,
Your first hires won’t just work for you; they’ll build with you.
